We're not licensed builders — and for decking work in WA, we don't need to be. Decking falls under a specific exemption in WA building legislation, which means projects of this type can legally be completed without a builder's registration. We operate in accordance with advice from DMIRS (Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety) and follow the Home Building Contracts Act on all projects. We carry comprehensive public liability insurance and are members of the ADHRA (Australian Deck & Handrail Association). Do I need council approval for my deck?

What's the difference between timber and composite decking?

Timber (Merbau, Jarrah, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum) gives you a natural look and feel. It requires annual oiling to maintain colour and protection. Composite needs no oiling or staining, just occasional cleaning. It costs more upfront but less effort long-term. Both last 25+ years with correct installation. We'll recommend the right material for your usage, budget, and site.

How long will my deck last?

With correct installation and basic maintenance: Merbau lasts 25–40 years, composite 25–30 years. The bigger variable isn't the material — it's whether the subframe was built correctly. A poorly engineered frame will rot out at year 8 regardless of how good the boards are. Our 20 Year Deck Standard was built around this.

Which material is best for Perth's climate?

Both perform well in Perth. Merbau handles heat without warping or cracking if maintained. Composite can feel slightly hotter underfoot in direct afternoon sun — lighter colours and shaded areas help. If the deck gets full western sun and you have young kids running around barefoot in summer, we'll flag composite heat as something to consider before you decide.

Does Merbau require maintenance?

Yes — annual oiling to maintain colour and UV protection. Without it, Merbau weathers to a silver-grey. Some people like that look; most don't. Our DeckCare service handles annual maintenance if you'd prefer not to do it yourself. On composite, maintenance is just occasional cleaning with soap and water.

Merbau is a natural product — no manufacturer warranty on the timber itself, but we warrant the installation for 7 years. What we don't offer is a 20-year lifespan guarantee — no honest builder can, and any who claim to should be questioned on what it actually covers.
